Baptismal Record Comments
  • The first record above was transcribed from a certificate completed by Rev. John Peng in 1977. In the summer of 2001, it was possible to view the original baptismal register via microfilm. The second record was transcribed from a microfilm print of this original baptimal register.
  • This record places John's birth in Illinois and establishes that he and his mother Katherine were in Chicago in 1882. Knowledge of the year is important in searching for the ship on which they arrived. There was some concern that the year on the certificate might have been incorrect, but after viewing the microfilm, the year is definitely 1882.
  • It should be noted though that the 1900 Census indicates John's year of birth as December 1883 and the 1910 Census as 1883 also. However, as noted above the year is definitely 1882.
  • The sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. John and Theresa Novak. It is thought that the Novaks were the family that Katerina's parents sent her to stay with in Chicago. It is not clear if the Novaks were relatives of the Nemecs back in Bohemia. Later Katherine's brother Frank married a Mary Novak. However, no relationship is known between any of the Novaks or the Nemecs at this time.
  • There is some script writing next to Vaclav's name on the original record in Czech. It is hard to read since it is in Czech. While several prints were made, they were not as sharp as the screen. My personal transcript from the screen is: "ou ta doby siuzal pcik nim ouway zania nem onz elskey". Let us know if any of these words mean anything.

Communion Record Search Comments
  • St. John Nepumucene Communion Records begin in 1897 and extend until at least 1911, possibly to 1916. Before that time, they were not required to record communions
  • On July 5, 2001, a search was made of all Communion Records for 1897-1904.
  • No communion record was found for John Filipek. His siblings had their first communions at ages 11 and 12. Thus a logical year for John would have been 1894 or 1895, a few years before the church was required to keep records. There is some possibility, though that he had is first communion in Colorado, but the timing suggests that it was at St. John Nepomucene in 1894 or 1895, a few years before records were kept.

Confirmation Record Search Comments
  • St. John Nepumucene Confirmation Records are for the years: 1895, 1899, 1903, 1908, and 1914.
Before that time, they were not required to record them. Confirmations did not take place every year, and appear to be 4, 5, or 6 years apart. Most likely it depended on the number of applicants.
  • On July 5, 2001, a search was made of all Confirmation Records for 1895, 1899, 1903, 1908, and 1914.
  • No confirmation record was found for John Filipek. His siblings had their confirmations at ages 13-16. Thus logical years for John would have been 1895-1899, the years the Filipeks were in Colorado, so it is possible he was confirmed there. He was definitely not in the list for 1895, 1899, or 1903 for St. John Nepomucene.

WWI Draft Record Comments
  • The Selective Service Records have become publicly available in 2002.
  • While a date is not shown on his registration card, John would have registered on September 12, 1918, the 3rd of three registration dates since he was born between 1873-1886. On this date, he was 35 years old as stated.
  • The original microfilm should be found to try to find a better copy. See Roll 1439709, Draftboard 9
