This is to Certify
That Maria Filipek
Child of James Filipek
and Katerina Nemec
born in Chicago, Illinois
on the 10 day of December 1889
was Baptized
on the 15 day of December 1889
According to the Rite of the Roman Catholic Church
by the Rev. Francis Bobal
the sponsors being Frantisek Nemec and Marie Dedina
as appears from the Baptismal Register of this Church

Dated February 21, 1977
Rev John Peng

Baptismal Record
St. John Nepomucene Church, Chicago, Illinois
  1. Baptized: 15 pros 1889 (15 December 1889)
  2. Child's Name: Maria Filipek Filipek
  3. Birth:10 pros 1889 (10 December 1889)
  4. Father's Name: Vaclav Filipek
  5. Mother's Name: Katerina Nemec
  6. Sponsors: Frantisek Nemec and Marie Dedina
  7. Priest: Rev. Francis Bobal

Baptismal Record Comments
  • The first record above was transcribed from a certificate completed by Rev. John Peng in 1977. In the summer of 2001, it was possible to view the original baptismal register via microfilm. The second record was transcribed from a microfilm print of this original baptimal register.
  • This record places Mary's (Maria's) birth in Chicago in 1889. Knowledge of the year is important in searching for the ship on which they arrived, since it is thought they came a second time. There was some concern that the year on the certificate might have been incorrect, but after viewing the microfilm, the year is definitely 1889.
  • It should be noted though that the birth year indicated in the 1900 Census for Mary is December 1890 and not December 1889; however, the birth year is corrected to 1889 in the 1910 Census. There is definitely no Mary or Maria Filipek born in 1890 or any other year nearby.
  • Mary's Baptismal Sponsors were Frantisek Nemec (Katherine's brother) and Marie Dedina. It is guessed that Marie Dedina might have been a daughter of Albert and Rose Dedina.

Communion Record
St. John Nepomucene Church, Chicago, Illinois
  1. Communion Date: 1902
  2. Name: 1. Marie Filipek
  3. Priest: Rev. Francis Bobal

Communion Record Comments
  • The information was transcribed from a microfilm copy of the original St. John Nepomucene Communion Records.
  • The records provide just a numerical list of names of all the children receiving their first communions for that year.
  • At the top of the list of names are the Czech Words: "Ditky K. I. So.. Priji'ma'ni' v roku 1902". Melissa provided a partial translation as: "Ditky (Little children) K. I. So.. Priji'ma'ni' (Holy Communion) v roku (in the year) 1902".
  • Usually First Communions take place in the spring, thus in the spring of 1902, Mary would have been 12 years old. This is a bit older than nowadays which usually is about age 7. This information will help date the first communion picture we have of her.

Confirmation Record
St. John Nepomucene Church, Chicago, Illinois
  1. Confirmation Year: 1903
  2. Name: Marie Filipek
  3. Confirmation Name: Cecilia
  4. Sponsor: None Listed

Confirmation Record Comments
  • The information was transcribed from a microfilm copy of the original St. John Nepomucene Communion Records.
  • St. John Nepumucene Confirmation Records are for the years: 1895, 1899, 1903, 1908, and 1914.
Before that time, they were not required to record them. Confirmations did not take place every year, and appear to be 4, 5, or 6 years apart. Most likely it depended on the number of applicants.
  • Confirmations are presided over by the bishop or archbishop.
  • The records provide just a numerical list of names of all the children being confirmed that year.
  • Confirmations can take place in the fall or the spring. In the spring and fall of 1903, Mary would have been 13 years old. This information will help date the confirmation picture we have of her.
  • Other recognizable names from the 1903 list of confirmed are: Frantisek Dedina, Vaclav Dytrych, Frantisek Jana, Edward Jana, Frantiske Dytrych.
  • In addition, Katerina Filipek was the sponsor for a girl named Ann Mach, who took the name Katerina. Possibly this is the girl in the unknown picture with Katherine Filipek.
  • Other recognizable names from the 1903 list of communions are: Frantisek Nemec.

nine o'clock

Twenty-fifth Street and Princeton Ave.

Reception 8 p. m. at Liberty Hall

3000 Union Ave.

Chicago

Wedding Invitation Record Comments
  • The invitation shows Mary as Marie. Her baptismal record shows her as Maria. I believe these names were all used interchangeably.
  • It is not known what Mary's middle initial stands for.
  • It seems unusual that a wedding would be on Tuesday morning, whereas today they are usually on Saturdays to allow more people to attend. Perhaps with the close neighborhoods, people of the time could easily walk to the wedding from their shops and jobs more easily than today. September 10 was also Mary's father's 49th birthday, a nice touch, and perhaps the reason that day was chosen.
  • This record confirms that St. John Nepomucene was still at its original location on the northwest corner of 25th and Princeton and had not moved to 2953 S. Lowe.
  • The location of Liberty Hall would have been only one short block away from the Filipek grocery store at 3001 S. Emerald. It no longer exists as a newer house has been built there.
  • A copy of the original wedding invitation can be found in the Mary Filipek Picture Collection.

Church Marriage Record Comments
  • It is unclear what 3 denuntiationibus means, perhaps it means banns were put in three times.
  • The priest made an error on Mary's Baptismal date, it was December 15, 1889, not December 22. It looks like he accidentally picked up the next person's baptism on the Baptismal Records.
  • John Filipek would be Mary's older brother and Florence Barrett would be Lawrence Barrett's sister.

  • Mary was born in December 1889 so she actually was 26 years old.
  • For C-sections during those times, the cause of death would have been Supperative Peritonitis; woman were lucky if they lived through the surgery; they would let them labor for days before they would go to the C-section; there were no antibiotics in those days [TN].
