- In April 2003, the name Gainowski and variants Ganowski, Geinofski, Geinoski and Gosnowski were searhed in 17 volumes of Germans to America by Ira Glazier and P. William Filby. The search began with Germans to America Vol. 41 August 1881 - October 1881 and ended with Germans to America Vol. 58 July 1889 - April 1890. Thus the range covered was August 1881 through April 1890. The index identified the individuals, ages, sex, occuupation, place from, destination, ship, embarkation port, and date and port of arrival. The search yielded no matches.
- The closest reasonable match was Gosnorowski, Josef, 23, 21 May 1886, City of Berlin, Liverpool to New York. Our Joseph Gainowski was 40 years old and traveling with a wife and family of five, thus this is not our Joseph Gainowski.
- The Gainowski family that immigrated to the United States in late 1886-87 included Joseph (1846) and Rosa (1847) and at least the following five children Anna (1871), John (1875), Rose (1879), Mary (1884), and Jacob (1886). James and Julia may also have been with them.

- In addition, the arrival indexes for Boston 1848-1891, Baltimore 1820-1897, and Philadelphia 1848-1897 were searched for Pajewski. No Gainowskis were found, although the search for Baltimore should be redone due to a Soundex coding error on my part. Family recollections are that our Gainowskis arrived in Boston about 1886-1887. It was disappointing that they were not in the Boston Index. All names with letters begining Gain, Gano, Geino, and Geino were reviewed.
- Ideas for future searches include obtaining the Germans to America CD for more efficient searches, including numerous variants; reviewing the Hamburg indexes; and reviewing actual Boston manifests for 1886-87.
