The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Co.

Pinon, Colo. 27 February, 1897

Dear John,

Already it's a long time I didn't write, because time does not allow it. Now I write because I read a notice in the Chicago Record that the day 25 of this month (a. m.) is a large cookbook which I could use.

Therefore I am requesting from you if you would be so loving send it to me. I'm enclosing the ad. Write how much it cost and the postage.

I end with heartfelt greetings.

I am your devoted Aunty.

K. Filipek

Dawkins, Colorado

Next time I write more, now I'm in a hurry.

Katherine Filipek's Pinon Letter to John Sokolik (February 27, 1897)

The Letter
This letter appears to be about two topics:

  • finding a cookbook in a Chicago newspaper ad
  • requesting John to get it for her

Comments:

  • While in Colorado, Katherine was reading a Chicago newspaper only a couple of days after it was printed. In a previous letter it was found that it took two days for the trains to get there, so it appears there was a regular plan to bring the Chicago newspapers to Colorado.
  • It is guessed that the unclear word is either a.m. or p.m. meaning the edition of the paper.
  • It appears Katherine started the letter from Pinon and finished it or just signed it while in Dawkins. Pinon and Dawkins were very close to each other and this may be nothing more than starting the letter one day, planning to add more later, and then being in Dawkins and mailing it off since she had other things to do.

The translation of this letter was done by Cindy Filipek Johnson's mother Janice in January 2001. The original and translated letter are below.
