Mary and John Filipek's Niagara Falls Postcard to their Father (about July 15, 1909)
This is scan of a postcard sent from Mary and John Filipek to their father from Niagra Falls, N.Y. in the summer of 1909. A transcription is as follows:

Niagara Falls N.Y.
Jul 15 1909 1:30 P [date is thought to be about July 15th]

Mr. Jas Filipek
3001 Emerald Av
Chicago Ill

Arrived here this morning had a nice trip.

Best wishes from.
Mary and John

People mentioned in this postcard are:

  • Mr. Jas Filipek, who is James (Vaclav) Filipek and Mary and John's father,
  • John, who is James and Katherine Filipek's 1st son, and
  • Mary, who is James and Katherine Filipek's daughter.

This is one of a sequence of postcards where it appears that John and Mary Filipek took a trip east during the summer of 1909. John was 26 and Mary 19 that summer. While it is difficult to see all the dates, a proposed sequence is Niagara Falls, then Thousand Islands, New York, then Prescott, Ontario, then Montreal, and finally Ashland, Massachusetts where they visited Katie Jana. Both the Niagara Falls and Prescott postcards cannot be postmarked July 15 but that is the best estimate of the approximate timeframe.

The postcard shows a picture of the Maid of the Mist which is still a highlight of Niagara Falls. I believe the ship is near the American Falls, which now has more rubble from a rock fall.

This postcard was discovered in Rose Filipek's home in Sarasota, Florida in the year 2002. Terry Nelson a g-granddaughter of Vaclav and Katerina Filipek has the original. If you would like to add information about this picture, please contact Dave Jordan, a g-grandson of Vaclav and Katerina Filipek. The Letter Reference Number is TNN32.
