James Filipek's Seventin Postcard to Katherine Filipek (June 1911)

This postcard was sent during June 1911 from James Filipek from Bohemia to his wife Katherine who had stayed in Chicago . A translation is as follows.

My dear!
Today I am at my sister in law in Sevetin. They gave me a cordial welcome and they were glad to see me here. I am fine and we remember you kindly. Send me here a letter from Prague, I am going there today .... illegible .... Write me soon.
Vaclav Filipek

Comments:

  • The postcard is stamped as Schewet../Sevetin. Only the day of the month is clear. The best guess is that it is 19 June 1911 as he returned to New York via Ellis Island on 2 July 1911.
  • The sister-in-law could be Katherine's sister, Maria, born in 1854, or her brother, Vaclav born in 1857. It could also be the wife of his brother Frantisek, but if that were the case he probably would have said "my brother Frank". It is thought that Frantisek was a teacher and architect in or around Prague so perhaps that is where Vaclav is going next.
  • It is not known if the houses on the front of the postcard are where his sister-in-law lived in Sevetin or whether it was just a postcard.

This postcard was discovered in March 2000 by Terry Nelson, a g-granddaughter of Vaclav and Katerina Filipek in her grandmother Rose Filipek's home in Florida.
