F. Kandl's Lomnice Castle Postcard to John Filipek (1937)

The painting is of a castle in Lomnice built in 1418. The painting is by by Ing. Frantisek Kandl, son of Jacub and Rosalie Kandl who painted a number of Filipek/Kandl scenes.

On the back is a postcard addressed to John J. Filipek dated 1937. Perhaps John and Frantisek met when John and his family visited the old Filipek Farm in 1929.

Scot of Prague provided the following translation/interpretation of the postcard:

"The Lomnice postcard from F. Kandl wishes everyone a Happy New Year 1938 from the bottom of his heart and says hello to all his friends in the States. On the top it says "Ing. F. Kandl-builder", Ing. is "Inzenyr," basically a title that Czechs use to indicate they have a college degree, like a B.A., can be in any subject, doesn't mean he was an engineer. He gives an address in Nusle (Prague 4) with the house number, sent from Prague ("V Praze") on December 20, 1937."

This postcard was discovered in March 2000 by Terry Nelson, a g-granddaughter of Vaclav and Katerina Filipek in her grandmother Rose Filipek's home in Florida.

In May 2010, Terry provided some additional information about the Castle painting. Her parents had recently visited Robert Filipek, son of James F. Filipek (Jim the Gardener) and while there her mother noted the original picture of the Castle in his guest bedroom. Robert told her that John Filipek (son of Vaclav Filipek) had given the picture to them when John and Rose moved to Sarasota in the 1950s.

If you would like to add information about this picture, please contact Dave Jordan, a g-grandson of Vaclav and Katerina Filipek. The Letter Reference Number is TNN23.
