As follows are a series of 17 colored pictures of various sites in Colorado. These pictures were obtained by James and Katherine Filipek and most likely were memories of their stay while working for the Denver and Rio Grand (D. R. & G.) from about 1895-1900. It is very possible that they received free railway passes and saw a number of these places while in Colorado.

A number of the pictures were made by the railroad, possibly as advertisements or memories of the interesting places you could visit. The photo cards do not seem to be postcards and are numbered from 101 to 115 with two unnumbered. Some pictures appear to be paintings while others may be actual photographs. They are very nicely done and give an interesting feel to the towns, technology, and dress of the times. Some of the pictures include early automobiles which may date some of these later than the year 1900. Possibly the Filipeks obtained these after they returned to Chicago, for example, from Theodore Sokolik's train travels back to Colorado. A little research needs to be done to try to date these early autos to better determine the year.

The fact that there is an entire collection from 101 to 115 leads one to believe they were all purchased together rather than collected one by one when visiting the site. Thus it is likely these pictures are memories of their stay in Colorado. Most likely though they visited a few of the places and like we buy postcards today to remind of us where we visited they purchased a whole collection. One place we believe they visited is Pike's Peak as referred to in John Filipeks 1898 letter.
