Marriage Registration Comments
  • This record was obtained from the Deputy Registrar, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Tower Hamlets Registration District on March 8, 1989.
  • St. Mary's Stratford Bow was a large church in the Poplar area. It would be an honor to be married there rather than the smaller churches in the area.
  • The age of "full" generally meant that the person was more than 21 years old.
  • The "X" mark for Elizabeth suggest that she could not write her name.
  • It is unknown who the witnesses are.
  • The Rector, G. T. Driffield would also marry Elizabeth Priscilla Holloway Steward in 1867 and again in 1876.
  • William Holloway, Elizabeth's father was employed as a trenail mooter. Trenails were the wooden pegs they used to tie the boards together in wooden ship construction. The trenails need to be a standard size to fit the pre-drilled holes. Bringing them to the "moot" or standard size ahead of time was necessary for efficient operation. The pegs were made for a loose but not tight fit and when the ship was wet the wood would expand to be a tight fit.
  • John Isaac Steward, Joseph's father was employed as a shipwright. A shipwright is a carpenter employed in the construction or maintenance of ships.
  • Joseph Steward was emloyed as a rigger. The term rigger could have included several different tasks. These might be fitting the rigging of the old wooden sailing ships or working with hoisting, tackle, cranes, pulleys, and scaffolds.

  • Elizabeth entered the Poor House about June 1907.

Obituary
Wisconsin State Journal April 13, 1908

Mrs. Elizabeth Steward died at Verona at 4 o'clock Sunday morning at the age of 83 years. She was born at St. Albans, Eng [land]. Her husband Joseph Steward died in England 16 years ago. There are three grandsons, J. H. Jordan of Madison, and Charles H. and J. O. Jordan of Chicago. A daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Jordan, also lives in Chicago. The funeral service will be held at the Schroeder undertaking rooms in this city tomorrow after-noon at 2 o'clock. Rev. A. A. Ewing officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill.

Obituary Comments
  • Joseph Steward died in October 1892, which was 15 years previously.
  • The St. Albans place of birth is a fascinating clue. The 1871 Census and 1891 Census indicate she was born in Poplar. There is a town of St. Albans north London, but it also might be a parish in Poplar or nearby.
  • J. H. Jordan is James Henry Jordan. He lived in Madison. J. O. Jordan is James Oscar Jordan. Charles was born as Charles Albert, but later he began using Charles H. The "H" could be Holloway after his grandmother Elizabeth or after his uncle Charles Hooper Steward.
  • It is unusual that the notice did not mention any of Elizabeth's 3 sons, Joseph, Charles, William and Harry. Charles was living with her in 1900 in Chicago.
  • Elizabeth entered the Poor House about June 1907 about the same time that her daughter and grandsons James O. and Charles started work in Madison. Her grandson, James H. had moved to Madison previously and had married earlier in 1907. From the obituary, it appears that by the time of her death her daughter and sons James O. and Charles had returned to Chicago. It seems a little unusual that her daughter would return with her mother in the poor house.

Forest Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum Letter

Forest Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum
1 Speedway Road
Madison, Wisconsin

January 13, 1979

David S. Jordan

"Sorry no record of Charles H. Jordan. We have an Elizabeth Stewart buried in a single grave #2, Lot 95, Sec. 23, who was English, died of pneumonia, on April 12, 1908 and buried on April 14,1908. We have no other information available. If there is a marker on her grave, we would not be able to tell until 23 inches of snow on the ground melts in the spring."

Response to a April 22, 1979 letter, after the snow melted, indicated "No marker."

Cemetery Record Comments
  • The full request letter has not been transcribed. Basically on this date, I requested information about Elizabeth Steward who had died on April 12, 1908 and also about a possible Charles H. Jordan. I did not have the obituary at that time.
  • Thus Elizabeth Steward is buried in a single grave far from her husband, children and grand-children. James Henry Jordan who remained in Madison all his life was eventually buried in a family plot in Roselawn Cemetery in Monona, Wisconsin.
