Marriage Registration Comments
  • This record was obtained from the Deputy Registrar, London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Tower Hamlets Registration District on October 2, 1987.
  • After Knut Oscar Scholdberg died, Elizabeth married James Jordan one year and a day later. Most likely it was either a tradition or a church law that one waited a year and a day.
  • Elizabeth continues to use Holloway in her name. This time as Elizabeth Priscilla Holloway Scholdberg.
  • She also indicates that Joseph Steward is her father.
  • A donkey engine is a machine on the docks that pulled the ropes to lift the cargo.
  • It is unknown who the witnesses are. It is curious that both are men. Perhaps Elizabeth's witness was a friend of her former husband from his sailing days. One would wonder why she didn't choose one of her four brothers.

Death Record Comments
  • Very little is known about James Jordan, the man who gave us our adopted the name. He was the second husband of Elizabeth Priscilla Holloway Steward Scholdberg. He married Elizabeth a year after her first husband, Knut Oscar Scholdberg died. It is not known how they met. He may have been from her Poplar neighborhood, or he may have been a shipmate of her husband.
  • There are numerous references indicating Elizabeth P. Jordan was widow, thus it is presumed that James died shortly before she came to America with her remaining children in 1893. However, it is possible that they divorced.
  • On the presumption that Elizabeth came to America as a widow and was prompted by his death, I arranged for a researcher to compile a list of all James Jordans that died in England between 1891 and 1893. Unfortunately, twenty-eight James Jordans were found. Twenty-five were listed simply as James Jordan with no middle name. None had died in Poplar; however, one had died in Bethnal Green. Bethnal Green is within a few miles of Poplar.
  • In July 1987, the full registration record for the Bethnal Green James Jordan was obtained. This registration revealed that a James Jordan had died on May 14, 1893, in the Workhouse in Bethnal Green, England. He was 51 years old and was employed as a silk weaver.
  • It is not clear from this record whether this is our James Jordan due to the lack of collaborating evidence. His age of 51 years would be reasonable to be married to a woman of 46; however, the signature of the informant is not his wife. In addition, the occupation does not seem to match since our James Jordan was a donkey engine driver in 1876 and a donkeyman in 1879, presumably on the docks. This does not seem like the kind of a person who would become a weaver, thus it is unlikely this is our James Jordan.
