Birth Record Comments
  • In 1990 Marjorie Hooper, a fellow member of the East of London Family History Society provided a copy of the above record. Marjorie had been searching the Hooper and Steward lines and contacted me about the above record to see if it would help. The Hooper and Steward connection are explored in The Jordan Story: A Steward/Hooper Connection.
  • Chrisp Street is about a mile away from the later long time residence of Joseph and Elizabeth Steward at 20 Wade Street from about 1871 to 1893.
  • Charles Hooper Steward shared the same birthdate (February 27) as his sister Elizabeth Priscilla Holloway Steward. Elizabeth was born 4 years earlier in 1847. It may have lead to a close relationship for them.
  • For example, in 1890 James Oscar Jordan, Elizabeth Priscilla Holloway Steward Jordan's son was living with his Uncle Charles Hooper Steward in Chicago. In 1893, Elizabeth Priscilla Jordan stayed with brother Charles for a number of years. She may also have named her second son, Charles Albert Scholdberg after him.

Baptismal Register Extraction Comments
  • This record is an extraction of data from The Docklands Ancestors Ltd Parish Register Transcription for All Saints, Poplar Baptismal Registers 1835-1857. The data was obtained from CD Volume 10, which was purchased 17 February 2007.
  • The extraction shows Charles Hooper Steward's date of birth as 24 February 1851 versus 27 February 1851 on the birth registration. It is presumed 27 February is correct.
  • Elizabeth Priscilla Steward and her brothers Joseph John Steward and Charles Hooper Steward were all baptized on the same day.

Marriage Announcement Comments
  • In 2006, Diane Cusiel forwarded me the above information she had obtained from a Rootsweb message board while searching for Stewards.
  • The uniqueness of the middle name strongly suggest this is our Charles Hooper Steward.
  • The location of Montreal was a surprise as it was thought he came directly to Chicago.

Divorce Comment
  • The 1900 Census indicates that Charles was divorced by 1900. He had a child named Alice.

Ship Arrival Record
  • Based on his marriage in Montreal in 1876 it appears that he arrived in Montreal sometime previously.
  • The 1900 Census indicates that Charles arrived in the USA in 1880. Given his marriage in Montreal in 1876 (see marriage information) it appears he may have arrived in the USA in 1880 via Canada.
