Marriage Record
Bohemia

Date: January 29, 1884
Location: Unknown

Marriage Record Comments
  • At this time the marriage record for James and Katherine has not been found.
  • The January 29, 1884 marriage date was found on Katherine's 1929 Passport Application. However, it did not say where the marriage took place.
  • A search was made in March 1977 by St. John Nepomucene Church in Chicago for the years 1880-1891 and similarly a search was made in 2001 for the same years by Dave Jordan of the microfilm copy of the St. John Nepumucene marriage reccords. No marriage record was found in either search for James and Katherine Filipek.
  • Currently the records are being searched in Bohemia.

Death Record Comments
  • Katherine's birth record indicates a year of birth of 1862, while her death record indicates 1863, and her 1929 passport application indicates 1864. It is assumed that 1862 is the most correct. Possibly Katherine made herself older so she wouldn't be a year older than her husband. This seems to have been common for the times.
  • It's too bad her mother and father's name weren't mentioned.
  • She seems to have switched back to Katerina, the name she was born with.

Obituary Comments
  • It's surprising that the only grandchild mentioned was Mary Borskey as there were three others.
  • In addition, there is no listing of her activities, such as leadership position in the church.

Denni Hlastal Obituary Comments
  • Above is a transcription of an obituary from the Czech Newspaper, Denni Hlastal.
  • It is hoped at some point to obtain a full translation.
  • Because of the poor quality of the reproduction and difficulty in making out words some words may be missing or spelled incorrectly in the transcription.
  • Question Marks (?) were used to substitute for letters or words which couldn't be made out.
  • At this time, we can't translate any of the words; however, it appears that similar to the notice for Vaclav from the Modern Woodman of America that this one was submitted by from an organization, although it's not clear which one at this time.

Indication of fees paid as follows:

  • 1934: $5.12
  • 1957: $7.68
  • 1965: $15.36

Cemetery Record Comments
  • This is a relatively large plot of land and it appears Katherine purchased it on the presumption of having it for her whole family. Two Hundred Dollars also seems to be a fairly large sum given the year 1914.
  • The headstone is gray granite and about 5 foot high with the name FILIPEK engraved in. It is unclear who paid the fees in 1957 and 1965 and what they were for, although one would guess it was John Filipek.
  • Many of the graves in the area are Czech and the grounds are beautiful with a number of large trees.
  • Vaclav's age is correct at age 50. Mary's age should be 26 since she was born December 10, 1889.
  • Katherine's age matches her death certificate, but it really should be 85 years since she was born October 20, 1862.
  • The 72 Burlington Road, Riverside address is interesting since the record implies she was living there in 1914 however we know she was at 3001 Emerald and did not reside at Burlington until the late 1920s.

Funeral Home Records Search
  • A request was made of the Funeral Home for any records.
  • The February 1, 1977 response was that the ownership of the funeral home had changed three times and the only record they still have is a billing record.

Tombstone

FILIPEK
VACLAV FILIPEK
ZARI 10, 1863-LEDNA 10, 1914

Tombstone Comments
  • The above is a transcription of the Filipek Tombstone at Resurrection
  • The only inscription on the Filipek Tombstone is for Vaclav. There is none for Katerina or for Mary or John.

Last Will and Testament and Distribution of Estate Search
  • A request was made on January 24, 1977 of the Clerk of the Circuit Court, Probate Division for Cook County, Illinois to search for the last will and testament, distribution of estate and inventory list for Katheryn or Catherine or Katerina Filipek who died on January 19, 1948.
  • The response was "We are unable to find any record of probate on the estate of the person name herein, in the Probate Court of Cook County, Illinois. They wrote "1948-1951, no estate no will".
  • This is surprising since it is believed she owned the property at 253 Olmstead Road in Riverside. If she did, then how did the heirs dispose of this property. Even if she died intestate, the state would have designated the heirs. Someday this should be searched again for a slightly longer time period and also the property records for 253 Olmstead Road in Riverside to review the date of purchase, sale and ownership.
