Gravestone Comments
  • In 1978, I visited the Matthijs and Trijntje and Adrianus and Martha Vanderkloot Graves at Oakwoods Cemetery in Chicago. While there I also found the graves of Marinus and Meise Vanderkloot, brother of my Matthijs Vanderkloot.
  • I did not take a picture, but I did make a transcription of the information on the gravestone which is shown above.
  • My recollections are a little fuzzy at this time, but I believe there was a huge stone, possibly a small building on the grave site. I recall it being about 10 feet high and about the same on all sides, although I could be off a little. I can't recall whether it was a building with a door or a very large marker.
  • As follows is an interpretation of who's who on the gravestone.
  • Marinus A. Vanderkloot is probably the son of Adrianus Vanderkloot, the 1st son of Marinus and Meise Vanderkloot.
  • Dennis P. (Teunis) Vanderkloot is the 2nd son of Marinus and Meise Vanderkloot.
  • Meise K. Vanderkloot is the wife of Marinus Vanderkloot. It is unclear why the middle initial is "K".
  • Marinus Vanderkloot is the husband of Meise and the father of this clan.
  • Peter S. Vanderkloot is the 5th son of Marinus and Meise Vanderkloot. Matthijs Reijer Vanderkloot and John V. Vanderkloot were older.
  • Mary S. (Mae) Vanderkloot is believed to be the wife of Peter S. Vanderkloot.
  • Meise V. Vanderkloot is believed to be Meise Viola, the daughter of Peter S. and Mary (Mae) Vanderkloot.
  • In my notes, I separated Mathias R. and Olive C. It is possible they had a separate stone. Mathias Reijer Vanderkloot was the 3rd son of Marinus and Meise Vanderkloot. Olive Cantine was his wife.
  • It is believed that the grave of Adrianus Vanderkloot, the first son of Marinus and Meise Vanderkloot and his wife Elizabeth are in Lake Bluff, Illinois.
  • It is unknown where the grave of Marinus Vanderkoot, the 6th son of Marinus and Meis is located.
  • Marinus and Meise had one other child, Dirkje, who died at age 2 in Zijpe).
