Be it Remembered, that on the 8th day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty eight in the Circuit Court of Cook, in the State of Illinois (the same being a Court of Record, have a Clerk and Seal), and of the September term thereof, for the year aforesaid Andrians VanderKloot an alien, came into Court and applied to be admitted as a Naturalized Citizen of the United States, and it having appeared to the satisfaction of the Court that the said applicant has resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States for and during the full term of five years last past, and one year and upward immediately preceding the date hereof, in the State of Illinois and that during said term of five years he has been sustained of good moral character, and appeared to be attached to the principles contained in the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to good order, well being and happiness of the same; and two years and upward having elapsed since the said applicant filed the declaration of his intention to become a citizen of the United States, according to the provisions of the several acts of Congress heretofore passed on that subject; and he having now here, in open Court, taken and subscribed the oath required by those laws to support the Constitution of the United States, and to renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty whatever, and more particularly all allegiance which he may in anywise owe to King of Holland of whom he was heretofore subject.

It was Therefore Ordered and Adjudged by the Court that the said Andrians VanderKloot be and he was thereby admitted to all and singular the rights, privileges and immunities of a Naturalized Citizen of the United States, and that it be certified to him accordingly, which is done by these presents.

Naturalization Records Comments
  • It is believed that the above naturalization record is the Naturalization Certificate which the applicant keeps to proved his citizenship. The original of this record is in the possession of Harry Schodrof. In this document the name appears in script as Andrians, and not Adrianus.
  • The court kept copies of two other naturalization records, the declaration of intent and the final oath. These have not been obtained yet for Adrianus Vanderkloot. The following information was obtained in a request for information to the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1976: Declaration of Intention was filed on March 4, 1886; Naturalization on October 8, 1888 in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois; Record of Adrianus Vanderkloot #17-450 (this is probably the index record number). These records are now at the Regional Archives in Chicago and can be obtained.
  • Adrianus arrived in Chicago about 1881 from Holland. He made his declaration after about 5 years in the USA. In 1888, when he became a citizen, he was 36 years old.
  • There is relatively little genealogical data in the actual records but they are interesting to see.
  • There are no naturalization records for Martha Vanderkloot. At the time, children under 16 acquired citizenship through the naturalization of their parents and between 1855 and the Cable Act of 1922, a woman automatically became a citizen either by marrying a citizen or by the naturalization of her husband.
