On August 18, 1893, Elizabeth Priscilla Jordan (age 46), her mother Elizabeth Steward (about age 65), and two sons Charles Jordan (age 19) and James Henry Jordan ( age 13) arrived at Ellis Island on the S.S. Britannic. Her oldest son James Oscar Jordan and brother Charles Steward were already in Chicago. Elizabeth Priscilla Jordan and her travel companions would have traveled from their Poplar home in the East of London via rail to Liverpool where they boarded their ship, the S.S. Britannic. After being cleared from Ellis Island, they would have boarded the nearby rail line to Chicago to stay with her son, son James Oscar Jordan and brother Charles Steward.

The S.S. Britannic was a large passenger ship with the White Star Line and regularly traveled back and forth between Liverpool and New York carrying passengers and mail. In 1893, she arrived in New York 12 times . The S.S. Britannic was a combination steam and sailing ship and was built in Ireland in 1874. It was about 455 feet long by 45 feet wide and was made of iron. It had two funnels and four sailing masts. Two of the sailing masts were positioned in front of the funnels and two positioned behind. It could travel about 16 knots.

The Wikipedia article SS Britannic (1874) includes the ship history and a number of photos.

In 1991, I arranged for the name Elizabeth Priscilla Holloway Jordan to be added to the Centennial Edition of the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island. I chose her name as representative of her sons, her mother, and her brother. It is from her that our then small group of Jordans has multiplied and spread out around America.
