In this portrait, Frances has on a stylish hat, a long heavy coat and is carrying a purse. She does have that after the war, early 20’s look. The photo was taken by the Wood Studio at 5250 Wentworth, Chicago about a mile from her mother’s home at the time.

The photo was a mailable postcard, suggesting Frances was planning to mailing a number of them. In researching Frances Jordan on Ancestry in 2024, a newspaper clipping for March 31, 1922 from the Chicago Suburbanite Economist appeared.

The clippings read as follows:

  1. The engagement is announced of Frances Florence [Jordon], daughter of Mrs. R.A. Graham, 6735 Lafayette Ave., to E.H. Hollinshead of Los Angeles.
  2. The engagement is announced of Miss Frances Florence Jordan of 6735 Lafayette Ave. to E.H. Hollinshead of Los Angeles, Calif. The wedding will take place in June.

In the previous photo, Frances Jordan Engagement Portrait - Dec 15, 1921, it was suggested that the ring was on her right ring finger could be a promise ring, giving a chance for both to think about it before a final decision. The wording in the announcement in the Suburbanite Economist 3 months later, The engagement is announced indicates not only that Florence and Ernest were ready to proceed. But also Florence would be leaving her mother, four brothers and favorite Aunt Muriel and cousin Dolores Woodbury in Chicago for a new life in Los Angeles.

So why all this text associated with this postcard photo. I felt it useful to share the story about their engagement announcement in the Suburbanite Economist and felt this photo postcard might be tied in as a way to send to friends and more distant family about her news. Maybe so maybe not. But either way, a little more of her story is told through these few photos I have of Florence at the time.

Beverly Lynch inherited this portrait from her father Charles J. Jordan, the 3rd son of James Oscar Jordan and brother of Frances Florence Jordan. In the late 1980s, Beverly gave this photo to Dave Jordan as part of his genealogy research into the Jordan family.
