Notes
  1. It is unclear whether the original name in Bohemia was Jana or Janu. There is some information suggesting the original family name was Janu, but to date no genealogy record from Czechoslovakia has been obtained to verify this. Most references to the family in the United States use Jana, Janna or Yanna. Since the earliest known use is Jana and is consistent in early records, Jana will be used throughout these pages. It should be noted however that various phonetic spellings such as Gunia, Yana, and Yanna and have been found in numerous records by BH. It appears the extended family evolved over time to the consistent use of Yanna. Perhaps this is because Americans would pronounce Yanna correctly to their ear, but would pronounce Jana with the "J" sound.
  2. Various nicknames or alternates names have been identified for the children of Frank and Katerina Jana. These are listed in parentheses for easy matching with records from later times.
  3. Katherine May Jana's month, date, & place of birth taken from her delayed birth application, but year from the 1880 census. Place of birth, Le Sueur, Minnesota is thought to be the city vs somewhere in the Le Sueur County [BH].
  4. It is thought that Kate Jana married a Nemey and that Frank is her son.
  5. The 1900 census indicated Anna, presumed to be Annie Jirsa Yanna was born May 1860 Bohemia.
