Family Chart Notes
  1. Clicking individual names under the Parent's/Children's column transfers to that individual's Family Chart.
  2. Many later records indicate a year of birth was 1897 for Herbert A. Jordan. There were no Illinois Birth Records until 1916 but it is believed that his year of birth was 1898 based on 3 records close to his year of birth. These include the 1900 and the 1910 Census, and Margaret Jordan's Nov 9, 1911 Bill of Complaint against husband James Oscar Jordan. Margaret Jane Graham’s April 20, 1939 Petition for Naturalization and Permanent Residency indicates 1898. It is believed that at the time of his marriage, Herbert A. Jordan switched to a year of birth of 1897 in orde to make himself one year older. Meanwhile his wife Elizabeth Pajewski (Page) made herself 3 years younger (1895 to 1898) so that she would be younger than him.
  3. On the 1900 Census Herbert A. Jordan was indicated as Herbert O. Jordan, probably to duplicate his father's middle name Oscar. Later he switched his middle name to Arthur, the same as his brother.
  4. Many later records show a year of birth of 1901 for Frances F. Jordan, but it is believe to be 1900. Her 1910 Census Record indicates her year of birth as 1900 but her 1920 Census Record implies 1899. Margaret Jordan's Nov 9, 1911 Bill of Complaint against husband James Oscar Jordan indicates she was 11, implying a birth year of 1900. In addition, Margaret Jane (Jordan) Graham’s April 20, 1939 Petition for Naturalization and Permanent Residency indicates 3 Jul 1900. Her brother Edward Jordan was born 25 Mar 1902, thus making it unlikely she was born 3 Jul 1901. Thus at this time, the earliest and best data appears to imply a year of birth of 1900.
  1. Various early records indicate a year of birth for Arthur of 1904-1905. The 1900 Census implies his year of birth as 1905, but the 1920 Census implies 1904. Margaret Jordan's Nov 9, 1911 Bill of Complaint against husband James Oscar Jordan indicates he was 7, implying a birth year of 1904. But the Margaret Jane (Jordan) Graham’s April 20, 1939 Petition for Naturalization and Permanent Residency indicates 1 Mar 1905. However, 1 March 1904 is not possible; See analysis below. Thus his birth date will be assumed to be 1 Mar 1905.
  2. Transcript and Analysis of Paragraph from Margaret Jordan's Nov 9, 1911 Bill of Complaint concergning ages of the 5 children: "That five children were born of said marriage; that their names and ages are as follows: Herbert, age thirteen years, Frances F., aged eleven years, Edward A., aged nine years, Charles J., age eight years, Arthur S., aged 7 years. If these are correct, then years of birth for the children on Nov. 9, 1911 would be: Herbert (24 Jul 1898, age 13), Francis F. (3 Jul 1900, age 11), Edward A. (25 Mar 1902, age 9), Charles J. (16 Oct 1903, age 8), Arthur S. (1 March 1904, age 7). Having Arthur S. born 1 March 1904 only 4 1/2 months after Charles J. is not possible, thus 1 March 1905 appears most likely.
  3. The net resulting dates of birth with the adjustments to 24 Jul 1898 for Herbert, 3 Jul 1900 for Florence and 1 March 1905 for Arthur create a sequence of 5 children with reasonable times between their births. Margaret Jane Knowles Baptismal Record at St. Matthew's Presbyterian Church in Montreal indicates she was born April 18, 1878 and baptised on 10 July 1878. While it is quite clear on the Baptismal record, the 1900 Census indicates Margaret's birth was March 1878 and her death record and cemetery record indicate March 19, 1878 instead of April 18, 1878. Perhaps the early death of her mother when she was 14 caused confusion for Margaret on her exact month and day of birth or it is possible that the minister made an error in this record. For consistency and because the Birth/Baptismal record is the earliest record, April 18, 1878 has been used as her date of birth.
