Records Search Plan - Jordan Families

As follows are record searches that could provide additional knowledge about our Jordan/Scholdberg family and the families they married into such as the Holloway and Steward families. Items listed are future investigations and are not likely to be available soon. You may wish to contact Dave to determine the status of an item or volunteer to pursue it. In some limited cases, theFamily History Library Films page may list a research film number for a search item below.

Jordan/Scholdberg Family

Carl Johan Scholdberg
  1. to determine our town of origin in Sweden
  2. The vital records index for Jamshog, Blekinge, Sweden appears promising. See Scholdberg Initial Pages. See Knut Oscar Scholdberg for approach to link to this data.
Other Scholdbergs
  1. Chicago Directory: There is an entry for a Charles Scholdberg, tinner in the 1885 Chicago Directory for only that year. Tthere is also an entry for an Ame O. Scholberg, nurse at Augustanta Hospital in the 1902 Chicago Directory for only that year. Could these be a relatives of our Scholdberg's?
  2. The US 1880 Census shows a Hanna Scholdberg born 1852 in Sweden, servant for Walter Judd, family at 250 Funneth Ave in NYC. There is no known connection to our family, but the name is uncommon in the USA at that time, so this is a placeholder in case something else shows up about Hanna and our family.
Knut Oscar Scholdberg
  1. Ship Records: to establish the chain of ships that he sailed on and eventually to work backwards to his town of origin in Sweden. With luck a date of birth might also be shown.
  2. Ship Records: Determine if James Jordan shows on any of Oscar's ship records to see if they were aquainted.
  3. Death Record: Determine if there would be a death record issued since he died in Alexandria.
  4. Small Pox Hospital Records: Knut Oscar Scholdberg was left in a New York Hospital when the ship he was crew with left him in New York on January 25, 1869 as he was too ill to travel back to London. It is possible he sent to the Small Pox Hospital on Roosevelt Island (today's Governor Island) for quarantine. The records for the Small Pox Hospital can be found in the Family History Library.
Elizabeth Priscilla Holloway Scholdberg Jordan (nee Steward)
  1. 1881 Census Records: to try to determine information about her husband James Jordan; currently James and Elizabeth Jordan cannot be found.
  2. 1891 Census Records: to try to determine information about her husband James Jordan; currently James and Elizabeth Jordan cannot be found.
  3. Death Records: to determine what became of James Jordan
  4. Divorce Records: to determine if that they were divorced.
  5. Ship Records: to determine if he was a friend of Knut Oscar Scholdberg
  6. 1851 and 1861 Census Records: to see how the relationship to her Joseph Steward is stated as daughter of daughter by marriage or something similar. Such a statement would provide information about whether he was her father. Bring 1861 Map to show location of 3 Jeremiah Street.
  7. Determine Maternal Grandparents: to determine if her maternal or paternal grandmother was named Priscilla. If it was her paternal grandmother, it would strengthen the ties to Joseph as her father.
  8. 1910 Census: See below to see if she is with her brother Charles Hooper Steward.
  9. 1920 Census: In Ancestry, it shows her birth as 1907. An index entry corrects to 1847, which is correct. However, another index correction indicates she was born in East Sussex which is incorrect. Try to correct someday.
  10. 1930 Census: To gather more information and see if sons Charles and James are with her.
James Oscar Jordan (alias Scholdberg)
  1. Ship Arrival Records: to determine name of ship and arrival date in USA and who was with him and whether he came with his Uncle Charles Steward.
  2. 1920/1930 Census: To gather more information on his date of arrival.
  3. 1880 US Census: On the off chance he came this early to the USA and young Oscar Scholdberg was with him.
  4. Mary Elizabeth Scholdberg
  5. Birth Record: The 1871 Poplar Census shows an Elizabeth Scholdberg age 1. The BMD shows her birth as 2Q 1870 Poplar 1c623.
  6. Margaret Jane Knowles married James Oscar Jordan in 1896.
  7. See also Knowles Research Plans Index.
  8. Death Record: The BMD shows her death as Mary Elizabeth Scholdburg as June 1871 2Q1871 Poplar 1c, 395 in Poplar, England (death registration used Scholdburg instead of Scholdberg)
Charles H. Jordan (alias Scholdberg)
  1. try to determine when and where he died, Illinois or Indiana.
  2. James Jordan
  3. Death or Divorce Records: to determine more about the man that gave our family its' name. Other than his marriage to Elizabeth P. Scholdberg and the birth of his son James Henry Jordan, no other records have been found. The death record search to date is ambiguous and he was not found in the 1891 Census. He did not come to America with the family in 1893. Either he died or there was a separation or divorce.
Herbert A. Jordan
  1. Selective Service Records: These records have become publicly available in 2002. These records might provide some information about his occupation, an address, and the year.
  2. Military Records: It is understood that Tim Jordan more have these. It would be useful to have a copy to determine dates and locations and where Herbert was baptized.

Steward Family

Joseph Steward

1861 Census Records: to understand his information about his relationship to Elizabeth Priscilla Holloway Steward. Bring 1861 Map to show location of 3 Jeremiah Street.

Charles Hooper Steward
  1. Ship Arrival Records: to determine name of ship and arrival date in Montreal or Canada and who was with him. See if there are Montreal to Chicago immigration records.
  2. Montreal Marriage: Obtain his Montreal Marriage Certificate for Sept. 28, 1876, possibly from St. John Evangelist.
  3. Northwest Mounted Police: See if Charles was in the Northwest Mounted Police. There are coincidences with the date and church of his marriage and William Knowles' just a few months later and the eventual marriage of Margaret Jane Knowles and James Oscar Jordan
  4. Divorce: try to obtain his Divorce Records from Eveline Annie Mathers.
  5. 1910 Census: Perhaps his sister Elizabeth Jordan is with him for 1910 .
